Why book direct
Booking direct in the Okanagan means dealing with the owner, not a reseller. You can ask the questions that matter before you arrive: how close the beach or the lifts are, whether there is parking for a boat or a ski rack, and how the place works for a family week at the lake or a wine weekend. StayCanadian does not add platform booking fees or stand between you and the host; we verify Canadian hosts and send you to their own website. Booking direct keeps more of your trip with the valley's local hosts.
The Okanagan is a long valley in the southern interior of British Columbia, strung along Okanagan Lake and a chain of smaller lakes that run south toward the US border. Highway 97 ties it together. Kelowna, on the east shore, is the largest city and the main airport, with West Kelowna and its wineries across the bridge. North of Kelowna, Vernon sits near Kalamalka Lake with Silver Star Mountain Resort in the hills above. To the south, Penticton sits between Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake, and Osoyoos, near the border, is known for its warm lake and dry, desert-like landscape. Big White Ski Resort sits in the mountains east of Kelowna. Summers are hot and dry and winters bring snow to the ski hills, so the valley works as both a lake destination and a ski destination.
In summer, the Okanagan is about the water: swimming, paddleboarding, and boating on Okanagan Lake, Skaha Lake, and Osoyoos Lake, with public beaches in most towns. The valley is one of Canada's best known wine regions, and tasting rooms line the roads around West Kelowna, Naramata, Oliver, and Osoyoos, along with orchards and farm stands in season. Cyclists ride the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, and hikers head up Knox Mountain in Kelowna or out to the viewpoints above the lakes. In winter the focus moves uphill to Big White and Silver Star for skiing, snowboarding, and Nordic trails, then back down to the valley for dinner.
Best season: Summer (July and August) for hot lake days and the busiest beaches; late spring and fall for wine touring, harvest, and quieter towns; winter (December to March) for skiing at Big White and Silver Star.
Yes. Every Okanagan listing on StayCanadian links to the host's own booking website, so you reserve straight with the local owner rather than through a third-party booking platform.
The main towns are Vernon in the north, Kelowna and West Kelowna in the middle, and Penticton, Oliver, and Osoyoos in the south. Big White and Silver Star are the region's big ski resorts, each with its own village of rentals.
Most travellers fly into Kelowna International Airport or drive in on the highways from the Lower Mainland or Alberta. Penticton also has a smaller regional airport. Check current schedules and road conditions before you go, especially in winter.
Stay in Kelowna or West Kelowna for restaurants, beaches, and wineries close together; Penticton or Osoyoos for warm lakes and wine country in the south; Vernon for Kalamalka Lake; and Big White or Silver Star for a ski trip.
Yes. Big White is east of Kelowna and Silver Star is above Vernon, and both have ski-in and ski-out rentals. Many travellers pair a ski week with a night or two in the valley.
Many wineries are open for tastings from spring through fall, and harvest runs roughly from September into October. Some stay open year round with shorter hours, so check with each winery before you visit.
A car is the easiest way to get around, since the towns, wineries, and ski resorts are spread along the valley and up the mountain roads. Confirm parking, and winter tire needs for the ski hills, with your host.
